About
Wrought-iron lattice tower on the Champ de Mars, named after the engineer Gustave Eiffel, whose company built it. Nicknamed "La dame de fer" (the Iron Lady). Visitors can go up to the first floor (57 m), second floor (116 m) and the top (276 m).
History
Built from 1887 to 1889 as the centrepiece of the 1889 World's Fair, marking the centenary of the French Revolution. It was originally permitted to stand for 20 years and was kept in part because it worked well as a radio antenna.
Good to know
- Book a timed ticket on the official site; tickets and combo packages are sold there at official rates.
- Stairs tickets only reach the second floor; to go on to the top you take the lift from there.
- Opening hours change by date, so check the official calendar before you go.
- It is always windy higher up, so bring a layer.
- For photos, Trocadéro across the river is the classic viewpoint; the light is best about an hour before sunset.
